Prize Law

Le capitaine nommera un capitaine de prise, à qui il remettra une copie de sa commission en course, au bas de laquelle se trouveront sa qualité de capitaine de prise, le nom du bâtiment et du capitaine capturés, le lieu, l'heure, le jour, l'an où ils ont été pris. Les papiers du bâtiment capturé seront remis au capitaine conducteur de la prise, dans un sac cacheté, lequel devra être délivré à l'amirauté lors de son arrivée dans le port d'armement.

Life lesson: A prize captain is appointed with a certified copy of the commission, and the captured ship's papers go in a sealed bag straight to the admiralty.
Notes: Prize captain appointment: receives commission copy annotated with: prize captain designation, captured vessel/captain names, capture location/time/date/year. Captured papers: sealed bag, delivered to admiralty on arrival. Chain of custody.
