Des sentences, jugemens et arrêts

Criminal Procedure
Titre II: De la procédure criminelle (On Criminal Procedure)
Chapitre X: Des sentences, jugemens et arrêts (On Sentences, Judgments, and Decrees)

Après la visite du procès, l'accusé sera conduit, sous escorte, au lieu où se rend la justice en la chambre du conseil, pour y subir interrogatoire sur la sellette, dont il sera dressé procès verbal, et joint au procès.

Life lesson: Before the final verdict, the accused is escorted to the courtroom for a final interrogation on the sellette — a ritual questioning on a low stool that signals the gravity of judgment.
Notes: Sellette interrogation: final pre-verdict questioning in chambre du conseil. Sellette = low stool/bench, symbol of accusation. Under escort. Procès verbal drafted and joined to case. Ritual element of ancien régime criminal procedure. Last opportunity for accused to address the court.
