De l'interrogatoire des prévenus

Criminal Procedure
Titre II: De la procédure criminelle (On Criminal Procedure)
Chapitre IV: De l'interrogatoire des prévenus (On the Interrogation of the Accused)

Si l'accusé est sourd-muet, et ne sait pas écrire, le juge nommera d'office, pour son curateur, la personne qui aura le plus d'habitude de converser avec lui par signe ou autrement.

Life lesson: For a deaf-mute accused who can't write, the judge appoints the person who knows best how to communicate with them — whether by sign language or other means — as their curator.
Notes: Deaf-mute accommodation: curateur appointed d'office. Selection criterion: most habitual communicator (par signe ou autrement). Early disability accommodation in criminal procedure. Recognizes sign communication. Curateur role: legal representative and communication bridge. Remarkably progressive provision for early 19th century.
