La représentation est une fiction de la loi qui fait entrer les représentans dans la place, dans le degré et dans les droits du représenté.

Representation is the law's fiction — the grandchild steps into the dead parent's shoes, inheriting in the place, the degree, and the rights of the one who died first.
Notes:
Definition of representation: legal fiction placing representatives in the position, degree, and rights of the represented person. Allows descendants of a predeceased heir to inherit in that heir's place. Cf. Code Napoléon Art. 739.
