Victorin Chevalier leaves the Gonaïves and the Cacos take the town
Haitian
Gonaïves was the scene of bitter struggles between the government troops commanded by General Victorin Chevalier and the revolutionaries of Saint-Marc, from 1868 to 1869. Blockaded by land and sea and abandoned by the government, Victorin Chevalier had himself carried with arms and baggage to Port-au-Prince by a French warship on 29 August 1869. The Cacos seized the town.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Gonaïves (les).
