Undated: (Petro, the Nation of Lwa Born in the Americas Under the Brutal Conditions of Slavery, More Aggressive Than the Rada Spirits, Characterized by Fast Drumming, Red Clothing, Frenzied Dancing, and Demands for Expensive Sacrifice): The Petro lwa are one of the most important nations of spirits in Vodou, and their origin story sets them apart from every other group: they were born in the Americas, forged under the specific conditions of slavery in Saint-Domingue. While the Rada lwa trace back to the gentler spiritual traditions of Dahomey, the Petro spirits carry the rage, urgency, and fierce energy of a people under extreme oppression. Petro ceremonies are recognizable by their fast, syncopated drumming, red clothing, and frenzied dancing. The Petro lwa demand expensive sacrifices, often a pig, and they will exact revenge if a promise is broken. Kalfu is one of the most prominent Petro spirits. Some lwa, like Erzulie, exist in both Rada and Petro manifestations, embodying different aspects of the same spiritual force depending on what the moment requires. The very existence of the Petro nation is evidence that Vodou is not a static inheritance from Africa but a living system that evolved in response to the specific violence of the New World plantation.
