His color is red, and his preferred offering is rum mixed with gunpowder. He is the lwa most commonly invoked by bokors and caplatas, practitioners of sorcery. Colonial and missionary observers predictably mapped Kalfu onto Satan, but that comparison flattens the theology. Kalfu is not evil in the Christian sense; he is the necessary other side of a spiritual system that acknowledges darkness as part of the structure of existence rather than an aberration to be conquered.
