Two gallows with fresh corpses greet Bobadilla’s caravels at Santo Domingo
… those who held themselves aggrieved by the Admiral and his brothers, and all the involuntary, especially those who earned the King’s wages, because they were not paid, and suffered great need of food and clothing and necessary things from Castile, their joy burst forth, and so all the people went about at every step forming knots of talk. After three or four hours, when the land wind ceased, as is the ordinary thing, and the sea wind returned that they call virazon or marero, the caravels entered this river and port, and at once two gallows appeared, one on this side of the river, where this city is now built, which is on the west side, and the other on the other bank, where the villa then was, on which two Christian men were hanged, fresh of a few days; people came and went to those of the ships, made their courtesies and reverence to the pesquisidor Bobadilla, asked and answered, but all always with caution, until they should see what world would follow.
