Toussaint writes from Fort de Joux, in the cold of the Jura

Haitian

On 27 October 1802 Toussaint Louverture wrote from Fort de Joux, the fortress high in the Jura where he had been held since August. He had been searched on arrival and stripped of his money, his watch and his spurs. He died there on 7 April 1803, of cold and neglect, without trial.
