Toussaint ordered the siege of Grand-Goâve raised, and the army of the North withdrew to the Acul.
Dessalines, since his last attempt against Grand-Goâve, had renounced new combats. On 19 thermidor (4 August) he formed a kind of line of circumvallation around the block-house and the other posts of Tauzin, while vessels blockaded the coast, in the hope of reducing the army of the South by famine (2). They cannonaded each other for some days. But the complication of events forced Toussaint to order the raising of the siege: the army of the North effected its retreat to the Acul on 27 thermidor (14 August) (3). The number of the unfortunates who lost their lives in the various engagements that had taken place until then at Grand-Goâve was estimated at four thousand (4). Dessalines busied himself with forming a defensive cordon. He sent Charles Bélair to occupy the Belle-vue plantation. He himself returned to Léogane.
