The treaty of Basel ceded the Spanish part of Saint-Domingue to France.
Haitian
The mother country had come out triumphant from the coalition of kings; at Basel she had dictated peace to Spain. The treaty, dated 4 thermidor (22 July), ceded to France the Spanish possessions of Saint-Domingue; it was thus to bring about the outcome of the war which Jean-François continued to wage with fury against the cause of liberty. It was the corvette the Vénus, Captain Désagneaux, which, entering the Cap on 22 vendémiaire (14 October), officially brought this happy news; she brought also the decree which declared that the army of Saint-Domingue had deserved well of the fatherland.
