The generals met in congress at Gonaïves in Vernet’s house, restored the name Haiti, named Dessalines governor-general for life and swore the oath to renounce France forever.
Haitian
The generals agreed to give back to the country its aboriginal name of Haiti (1), for which colonization had substituted that of Saint-Domingue (2). They named Dessalines by acclamation governor-general for life of the new State, with dictatorial powers, and each swore into his hands the oath “to renounce France forever, to die sooner than live under her domination, and to fight to the last breath for independence.” The fire of the artillery repeated this oath in the distance.
