The garrison withdraws to morne Grammont and Morisset charges the French

Haitian

On 24 February 1802, the garrison of this town, when the moment came to evacuate it at the approach of the French, gained the morne Grammont, where General Vernet met Madame Louverture and the whole family of the former governor, who had abandoned the habitation Cocherel. After the French had entered the burning town uttering cries of victory, Morisset, at the head of a squadron, charged them near the cemetery, at the moment when they were taking their rest. He made a frightful carnage of them, and returned to Grammont, carrying a flag he had taken from them. Christophe then came to join Vernet at Grammont; they then took the road to the Pont de l’Estère.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Grammont.
