The copper mine is discovered again
Today Cotui is a commune. It was founded in 1505 by order of Ovando. It was then called las Minas, because of the mines of gold, of copper (the latter half a day’s journey to the east of the village), of lodestone, of iron and of tin, which are found 27 km to the east of its territory. It is still called Mejorada. In 1520 the working of these mines, which had begun in 1505, was abandoned. In 1747 and on 15 February 1888 a very abundant copper mine was discovered. In the neighborhood of this last are two mines of magnetic iron. All are found in the mountain of Maimon. The gold mines of Cotui alone have yielded 1 million piastres; they can be restored at little cost. The mine called la Esmeralda (emerald), on the mountain, holds that precious stone. In the mountain range of Sévico and in its neighborhood there is iron almost in the pure state. Lapis lazuli, bole and plaster are found there.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Cotui ou Cotuy.
