The army names Émile Jonassaint provisional president

On 11 May 1994 the military high command designated Émile Jonassaint, an eighty-year-old judge of the Court of Cassation, provisional president of Haiti. He was installed the next day. Jean-Bertrand Aristide had been in exile since the coup of 30 September 1991, and nearly the whole international community still recognized only him. The soldiers made and unmade governments while claiming to negotiate with the United Nations. Jonassaint’s government lasted until 12 October 1994, when the Americans put Aristide back.
