The 1st battalion of the 17th demi-brigade rises at Fonds-Bleu, kills its commandant Momus and marches on Les Cayes; Rigaud’s artillery is overrun.

Haitian

The 1st battalion of the 17th demi-brigade, cantoned at Fonds-Bleu, a few leagues from Jérémie, rises at last in insurrection against the departmental government in favor of that of the Republic; and after putting to death its chief, Commandant Momus, it marches, on 27 June, on the capital of the South. Rigaud, having placed a battery of artillery on the main avenue of the city, advances to meet the insurgents on the high road. He harangues the battalion in vain. The battery is overrun. The national guard, encamped on the government square, struggles with intrepidity against the insurgents. It is routed. The insurgents spread through the town and succeed in seizing the post of the arsenal. Rigaud, shut up in the government house, had almost lost his reason. But at two o’clock in the morning some brave men, with Commandant Moulite Tuffet at their head, run up from the plain. Commandant Péroux (1) leads, with his usual intrepidity, this unhoped-for relief to the retaking of the arsenal. Borgella, whom Rigaud had raised to the rank of brigadier general, arrived from Aquin, completes the restoration of tranquillity (1).
