Sténio Vincent, president through the end of the occupation, dies
Haitian
Sténio Joseph Vincent died on 3 September 1959. Born 22 February 1874, he had been a journalist, a writer, a diplomat and mayor of Port-au-Prince before he took the presidency on 18 November 1930. He held it until 15 May 1941. Two things mark his government above all: the Americans finally left Haitian soil, and in 1937 Trujillo’s soldiers massacred Haitians along the Dominican border.
