Sonthonax swears in print he will never take back the emancipation of 29 August

On 5 November 1793 Sonthonax issued a printed broadside answering a rival proclamation put out by Lasalle from the Môle under English protection, which claimed to dismiss him. He denied that he had acted under duress at Le Cap, denied that Polverel was obstructing emancipation in the West and the South, and swore he would never retract his proclamation of 29 August. He announced that he and Polverel were drafting a law for all three provinces to settle the freedom of the enslaved absolutely, and ordered the text posted and registered across the North and West.
