Rigaud meets the rebel chief Goman in the Grand’Anse, and they part without terms.
Haitian
Rigaud, despairing of crushing the insurgents by force of arms, arranged for himself an interview with Goman. This interview took place on 10 July (3). The republican general and the chief of the rebels were each accompanied by a strong escort. Eloquence failed before cunning. While giving Rigaud the name of godfather, so sweet to the Black people of the islands, Goman, already won over by Christophe, promised the former to make no incursion on the coast, on the condition that he be left his independence in the *mornes*; this was absolutely to ask for the recognition of a little Africa on the territory of the Republic. They parted without being able to reach an understanding.
