Place de la Fusion inaugurated before President Hippolyte

Haitian

Built on alluvial soil where stone is lacking, the town ought to be provided with gutters, which are indispensable to its sanitation. A fountain is a matter of absolute necessity. Drinking water has to be fetched from some distance, and yet the town is flooded at every return of the rain. It is spread out and has large houses, several of which are in ruins, and a great number of empty building plots; it was severely damaged by the hurricanes of 1878 and of 9 September 1737. On 19 April 1891 the place de la Fusion was inaugurated in the presence of President Hippolyte. The trade in logwood gives a little animation to the locality. Right up to the gates of the town one meets clumps of sugar cane that are put through the small mill: the syrup that comes from it is consumed almost exclusively by the inhabitants.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Aquin.
