Pétion’s army dislodges the enemy at the Couyau habitation
President Pétion conceived the idea of going to attack Christophe and of besieging St.Marc again, which he wished to take, in order to bring relief to the expeditionary army commanded by General Lamarre at the Môle, which was in the last distress. He took the field on 3 September 1808. His army met the enemy on the 7th on the habitation Couyau and dislodged him. The most remarkable action of this siege was the one in which the vanguard, commanded by General Bonnet, came upon the enemy on the habitation Verrier, in the heights of Verrettes, who had taken there a very advantageous and even formidable position: he had entrenched himself in the ruins of the habitation, whose walls he had loopholed; so that, without being exposed, he poured the most violent fire on the troops of the Republic. The post of Verrier was taken at the bayonet point. A flag and all the arms and munitions there remained in the hands of the republicans.
Rouzier tells this under the entry ST.-MARC.
