Pétion reached Petite-Rivière, where Dessalines told him that his taking up of arms had decided his own.
Haitian
After passing through Plaisance and Gonaïves, Pétion entered Petite-Rivière, about 24 brumaire (15 November) (3). His arrival was an event. Dessalines came to inspect the 13th. He embraced Pétion with effusion, and said to him these memorable words: “It is your taking up of arms that decided mine.” Madame Dessalines did me the honor of telling me that Dessalines then offered Pétion in vain the general command of the army.
