Pétion issued from Port-au-Prince his manifesto answering Christophe, drafted by Sabourin.
Haitian
“At Port-au-Prince, 17 January 1807.
(Signed:) PÉTION (1).”
I have believed it my duty to set out at full length this page in which there shine forth so solemnly the individual dignity that men seek to outrage and the love of country that they seek to stifle.
I shall add nothing to it, except that the honor of the drafting belongs to Sabourin, then the judicious interpreter of the patriotic sentiments of the general in whom Christophe himself saw embodied, more particularly, the new revolution.
