Painter Wilson Bigaud is born in Port-au-Prince
Haitian
Wilson Bigaud was born in Port-au-Prince on this day. Hector Hyppolite spotted the boy’s talent and brought him to the Centre d’Art. In 1950 Bigaud joined Philome Obin, Castera Bazile, Prefete Duffaut, Rigaud Benoit and Toussaint Auguste to paint the murals of Sainte-Trinite Cathedral; his Marriage at Cana filled the south transept, with the wedding party set in a Haitian yard. The earthquake of 12 January 2010 brought the cathedral down and destroyed most of those murals. Bigaud died two months later, on 22 March 2010, at Vialet near Petit-Goave.
