Painter Ralph Chapoteau dies in Texas at sixty-nine

Ralph Chapoteau was born in Gonaïves on 16 September 1954. He entered the art academy in Port-au-Prince in 1974 and showed his work for the first time in 1978; after that his paintings travelled through the Caribbean, to Santo Domingo and Guadeloupe. He was a painter, a photographer and, as Le Nouvelliste called him, a marginal and a thinker. In May 2011 he and his wife Josette launched the clothing label Touta. He died of colon cancer in Texas on 21 May 2024, aged sixty-nine.
