Painter Gesner Armand is born at Croix-des-Bouquets

Gesner Armand was born on 11 June 1936 at Croix-des-Bouquets. At fourteen he walked into the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince and took drawing with Maurice Borno and watercolour with Pierre Monosiet. He worked in Mexico from 1958 to 1960 and studied in Paris from 1960 to 1962 on a French scholarship. He came home to Croix-des-Bouquets and painted the countryside in hard light – fields, pigeons, market women. From 1984 to 1992 he directed the Musee d’Art Haitien du College Saint-Pierre. He died at Croix-des-Bouquets on 10 June 2008, one day short of seventy-two.
