ORDINANCE of the King, concerning the Death of leased nègres
HIS MAJESTY having, by his Ordinance of the month of March 1685, concerning the enslaved of the Islands of America, Article LIV, ordered that Noble Guardians and Bourgeois Usufructuaries, Lessees and others enjoying estates to which working enslaved people are attached would not be bound, after their administration ended, to return the price of those who had died, or been diminished by illness, old age or otherwise; as also that they could not keep as fruit for their own profit the Children born of the said enslaved people during their administration, who would be preserved and returned to those who were their enslavers and those who claimed to own them; but practice having shown that the Lessees, not answering for the mortality of the enslaved, overworked them by hard labor, fed them very poorly, took no care of them in their illnesses, which caused the death of several.
