ORDINANCE of the Gouverneur Général, establishing a Company of Chasseurs of people of color

Haitian

Gabriel de Bory, &c.

Upon the representations made to us by M. the Vicomte de Belsunce, Maréchal des Camps et Armées of the King, Commandant Général under our orders of the Troops and Militias of this Colony, that it would serve the good of the service to form in this Island a Corps of Chasseurs, and upon the assurances we have that several free nègres and mulâtres are coming forward to serve in this Corps; as we believe we cannot do better than to defer to the proposals of this General Officer, and at the same time as we wish to give this corps the consistency it needs, and which it can have only through the concurrence of the authority entrusted to us, we have, by the present Ordinance, created and established, and do create and establish, a Corps of volunteer Chasseurs of America.

ART. I. This Corps shall be composed of free nègres and mulâtres, all of good will, serving with no other engagement than that of performing more exactly the personal service to which they are already subject.

ART. II. This Corps shall last only during the present war.
