ORDINANCE of the Administrators, imposing Fines on Settlers who do not furnish the number of Overseers, nègres, Carts, Horses, etc., for the public works relating to the defense of the Colony
GABRIEL de Bory, etc.
Jean-Etienne-Bernard de Clugny, etc.
The necessity of ensuring the prompt execution of the various works that we have been obliged to order, both for the defense of the Colony and for the communications to be established in the various districts; the negligence of some settlers in sending the number of nègres, Carts, Mules and Horses commanded for carrying them out and for the other needs of the King’s service; and the little care taken to see that these contraventions were punished according to the Ordinance of the King of 1711, have led us to renew its provisions and to fix the fines that offenders will have to pay, so that settlers, forewarned of the severity of these penalties, which shall not be regarded as merely threatened, may not put themselves in the way of incurring them. For these considerations, we have ordered and do order what follows; namely:
ART. I. Every settler who, after receiving the order, does not send to the works the prescribed number of nègres shall be sentenced to a fine of 50 livres for each day of nègres that he has not furnished.
