Maurice Borno, first president of the Centre d’Art, dies at thirty-eight

Maurice Borno died on 15 December 1955. He was a founding member and the first president of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, from 1944 to 1948. He came to painting through caricature, studying under Léonce Bance and by correspondence with a Paris school. In 1948 he was among the first visual artists anywhere to receive a Rockefeller Foundation grant, which took him to New York and Paris. He was one of the youngest figures of the indigenist painting movement, and he did not reach forty.
