Maurepas enters Port-de-Paix with 800 men singing the Marseillaise
Haitian
After the evacuation of the Gonaives by Vernet and the occupation of the place by Leclerc, Maurepas, seeing himself on the point of being surrounded, made his submission to General Debelle on 26 February. On the following day he entered Port-de-Paix at the head of 800 men, drums beating, colors flying, singing the Marseillaise. Debelle ordered Maurepas to take up his line of battle along the shore, opposite several frigates whose gun ports were open. The indigènes thought their last hour had come, and already the determination to die heroically showed on their faces, when Debelle ordered a ration to be distributed to them.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-DE-PAIX.
