Maurepas ambushes Debelle’s column near Brossier
On 20 February 1802, a column of General Debelle that was going to fight Maurepas, entrenched at the Trois-Pavillons, passing by the road from the Cap, halted on the glacis of the habitation Brossier. At once Maurepas ordered his soldiers to block, by means of tree trunks and stones covered with earth, the path by which it had just passed, and to take cover behind this rampart and on both sides of the road. The white women and the colons gathered on the habitation Brossier had cast discouragement into the souls of the French soldiers, already cast down by the earlier defeats, by painting the indigènes to them as barbarians without pity. As soon as they began their fire, Maurepas hurled a few cannonballs at them, which spread a panic terror among them. They took flight and were pursued relentlessly. When they reached the ramparts raised by Maurepas’s soldiers, they were met by a most lively fire, and nearly all perished.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Brossier.
