Villevaleix, who copied the said letter, will himself attest, is a passage in which the Holy See answers certain particular points of discipline on which I had consulted it, but this passage has no bearing whatever on the first part of the letter and is entirely personal to me. As to the charge you appear to lay upon the Holy See of not recognizing the Independence of Haiti because the Western Part of the Island is called the French Part: this expression means nothing other than the formerly French part. Do not the Haitians of the Western Part, in ordinary speech, give the name of Spaniards to the Haitians of the Eastern Part, and do not these latter call us, in their turn, French?
