The Wharf (Port-au-Prince). Scene of a brawl between French sailors of the brig Le Génie and Haitian laborers.

On 27 August 1844 there had been a brawl on the Wharf between the French sailors of the war brig Le Génie and the Haitian laborers. On the complaint of the Consulate of France, the Haitians had been arrested as having been the aggressors. They were held in preventive detention for four months, and at last acquitted on 17 December by the following judgment, which the foreigners, so often difficult and exacting, acknowledged to be equitable.
