Haiti. The Presidency of Haiti is offered to Guerrier.

At daybreak the conspirators went to the palace, and in the course of the morning they presented themselves to general Guerrier as envoys of the whole town, come to offer him the Presidency of Haiti. They told him that, Rivière Hérard having violated the Constitution, the citizens had the right to take up arms against him. At the head of these conspirators were Beaubrun and Céligny Ardouin, Mahotière, Aug. Elie, J. Paul, Eugène Nau, Louis Ethéart, Saul Liautaud, H. Lucas, F. N. Brouard, Sauveur Faubert, V. Plésance, Joseph Verna, Belanton, Hippolyte and Honoré Féry.

They called in general Archer, known for his Riviériste sentiments, and Hérard Dumesle himself, telling them that general Guerrier had a measure of general interest to communicate to them.

Guerrier, half drunk, answered that he did not accept the Presidency, that he would not betray Rivière Hérard, his friend. The conspirators declared to him that they were the delegates of the people and of the army, that they were all convinced that he alone could, in the circumstances, save the fatherland. Guerrier had long desired the Presidency, but he thought that matters were not yet sufficiently unravelled; nevertheless he let himself be overcome, mastered his scruples, and declared that he accepted in obedience to the will of the people and of the nation, while reserving to himself the right to take the oath only later.(bk)
