On 3 May generals Bellanton and Paul Cupidon, commanders of the arrondissement and of the place of Port-au-Prince, had all the posts of the northern line of the fortifications occupied by the sedentary national guard. The citizen Dumai Lespinasse was especially remarked for his zeal and his determination; near the Calvaire he set up a piece of cannon which he guarded himself, trained on the Pont-Rouge and meant to play upon Rivière Hérard should he attempt to seize the town; this demonstration was the object of general ridicule. Bellanton, Paul Cupidon and the two Ardouins had it spread through the ranks of the citizens that they must devote themselves to the cause of Guerrier, or else the piquets of the South would invade the town and massacre the young men of color. Paul Cupidon said to his agents: “Make our little cabrits (*) understand clearly that we do not desire their ruin, which the piquets demand of us, but it is urgent that they second us against Rivière Hérard for keeping Guerrier in power.”
