As soon as the conspirators were certain that the order to bring in the African battalion had left the office of the place, Joaquim Puello dispatched Eusebio to Polito Paredes, who lived at Pajarita (*), to tell him to keep the partisans of separation, his neighbors, on the alert, so that they might oppose any movement of the African battalion; to cut the cable of the ferry, if he had not men enough; and to fire three shots of a trabuco. Eusebio fulfilled his mission and saw that Polito had no munitions; he came back and sent him, at noon, by Juan Alejandro Acosta, a hundred packets of cartridges. At the same time he passed the order to all the separatists of the town to rally to him at the Force if they heard three shots ring out.
