Hispaniola. Named in the title of the separatist manifesto.

When these judged that everything had been sufficiently well prepared for the scission to be proclaimed, they resolved to draw up the Manifesto of the eastern part of the Island of Saint-Domingue against the Haitians. Francisco Sanchez, aided by Mella, drafted it; and at a meeting held on the night of 16 January 1844 it was read to the conspirators, who approved it. Contrary to the intrigues of Baez and of several other deputies of the East to the Constituent Assembly during their stay at Port-au-Prince, there was no question in it of France or of Colombia: the conspirators, true patriots, meant their country to be independent.
