Gonaïves. Retaken by Jason and Magny after three days’ cannonade

But meanwhile the generalissimo Christophe, having learned from Magny of the occupation of Les Gonaïves by Bazelais, had suspended his operations against Port-de-Paix and sent Colonel Jason toward that town at the head of the 2nd demi-brigade of Le Cap. Kept back by illness, he had not, contrary to his habit, put himself at the head of his troops. When he received Magny’s letter from an aide-de-camp, he flew into such a fury that he fired a pistol at the man. The ball missed him and struck the officer on duty, Saint-George, who died of it a few hours later. Jason joined Magny and the two of them attacked Les Gonaïves; from the 7th to the 9th of June both sides cannonaded each other furiously. Bazelais, Lamarre and Lacroix, overthrown on every side, abandoned the town; they tried to entrench themselves in the fort on the shore, but could not hold it and were obliged to embark. They remained a day in the roadstead under the enemy’s guns and got under sail for Port-au-Prince on the night of the 10th of June.
