Two days later, on the 21st, the troops of the West and the South were reviewed and paid; each soldier received five gourdes. They showed themselves very joyful, for they had never been paid under Dessalines as Emperor. The principal officers of the army signed the following document, whose faulty drafting makes it hard to understand in certain passages.
