Port-Français. Romain passed between it and the Prunet post

General Romain, encamped at Le Limbé, had received from Capoix, as we have seen, several thousand pounds of powder. He had under his orders the 1st demi-brigade and 1,000 organized cultivators. He conceived the bold plan of taking the town of the Cap from Rochambeau. On the night of 4 to 5 February he passed between Port-Français and the Prunet post and attacked the Métayer and Bousmat posts, which he captured. He then assailed the Grelot and Bourgeois posts; but he was repulsed. Battalion Commander Bertrand, who commanded at the Bourgeois post, was gravely wounded. The troops quartered within the walls of the Cap did not move until daybreak. Then Battalion Commander Rapatel launched two columns against the Métayer and Bousmat posts. The Indigenous were driven from the positions they had seized during the night. Rapatel could not, however, prevent them from burning most of the plantations of the neighborhood as they withdrew.
