Road from Ennery. Toussaint’s apartments pillaged on the day of his arrest

On the day of his arrest the French battalion commander Pesquidou, who commanded at Ennery, allowed his apartments to be pillaged. Madame Louverture, Isaac and Placide Louverture, and the commandants Morisset, Monpoint, Néron and César were arrested and at once taken under escort to the Gonaïves by a European officer named Flamand. They were embarked on the Guerrière, commanded by Ship’s Lieutenant Gimont, the same man who had been arrested with Sabès by Lamartinière on the arrival of Boudet’s division at Port-Républicain. Off the Cap the Guerrière joined the Héros, which took on board Madame Louverture, Isaac, Placide and Mademoiselle Chancy. The two vessels sailed for France on 26 Prairial (16 June), and anchored in the roadstead of Brest after a crossing of twenty-seven days. A few days later the ship of the line Aigle, with Battalion Commander Chancy on board, also entered the roadstead of Brest. Leclerc shipped to France a further hundred or so of Toussaint’s principal partisans who had been arrested. The frigate Muiron, which was charged with them, made for the Mediterranean.
