Raque-à-Vaches. Rochambeau took position before it.

Rochambeau’s division, having likewise scoured the Cahos, had followed the right bank of the Artibonite and on 22 March had come to take up position in front of the Raque-à-Vaches, to the southeast of the Crête, at the foot of the mountain of the Tranquillité, with its right resting on Hardy’s division and its left on the Artibonite. The grenadiers of this division, driven by vengeance, clamored loudly for the assault. But Leclerc, taught by experience, sent Rochambeau the order to check their ardor and to set up batteries to begin the bombardment: he had had some twenty pieces of cannon and several howitzers dragged from Saint-Marc to the Petite-Rivière. On 1 Germinal (22 March), the day of his arrival, Rochambeau set up a battery of seven pieces of artillery on a point that commanded the Crête, facing the redoubt held by Lamartinière. This new redoubt was protected by an abatis of logwood.
