Dufrété. Heights taken by Clervaux; Dessalines views Rigaud’s troops from here.

Dessalines, giving the enemy no time to catch his breath, ordered a division 8,000 strong, made up of the 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th, to seize the heights of the Dufrété plantation. Clervaux could take possession of them only after a most bloody fight. Dessalines, advancing in two columns with the rest of the army, reached him on 5 July (16 Messidor). From Dufrété he made out the troops of the South drawn up in the plain that stretched at his feet. They numbered 700 men, commanded by General Rigaud in person. Dessalines came down from the mornes with the right-hand column, while Clervaux, guided through the woods and ravines by Giles Bambara, a mountaineer of Petit-Goâve, strove to turn the enemy. He formed the right-hand column into three divisions: the first, or vanguard, was entrusted to Colonel Désir Laurent, the second, or center, to Colonel Dommage, the third, or rearguard, to Colonel Paul Louverture.
