L’Arcahaie. Lapointe writes from here to Rigaud.

“Arcahaie, 12 July 1797. To General Rigaud, commanding the province of the South. The war that Commissioner Sonthonax is kindling against you must convince you of the perversity of his designs and of his constant resolve to make Saint-Domingue the tomb of all who, before the revolution, were free and owned property. This bloodthirsty man, having annihilated the whites, or rather reduced them to such nullity that he has nothing more to fear from them, calls down the vengeance of the Negroes upon the men of color. To draw into his party the unfortunate whites who are found there, he has painted the men of color before their eyes as the destroyers of Saint-Domingue: the traitor knows full well the contrary; but to justify his atrocious plots he repeats it without cease. The French government pretends to believe it, or truly believes it. It has put you outside the law; and Sonthonax, eager for anything that may help to shed a blood whose only fault was to have listened to him, has already sounded the tocsin of death over the heads of those he now calls the mulattoes.
