Le Cap. Electoral assembly of the North and Artibonite meets; under threat from Gignoux and Pierre Michel it elects Sonthonax, Mentor, Annecy, Thomany and Laveaux.

Meanwhile there was great tumult in the electoral assembly. Sonthonax’s enemies were making every effort to prevent his election. Gignoux breaks into the assembly and threatens to cut down with his saber those who will not vote for Sonthonax. Suddenly General Pierre Michel, followed by many soldiers, appears in the hall. He had abandoned the column entrusted to him. In one hand he held a cocked pistol, in the other a saber. He sat down on the officers’ table and declared in fury that he would put everything to fire and sword if Sonthonax and his candidates were not elected. The terrified electors hastened to proceed to the election; the names of Sonthonax, Mentor, Annecy, Thomany and Laveaux came out of the urn. They were proclaimed deputies of Saint-Domingue. Sonthonax’s partisans went through the town singing the Marseillaise, insulted Raymond, whom they called a royalist, and threatened to ship him off to France. In the night that followed, several of Sonthonax’s enemies were arrested and put on board ship, among others Citizen Vermond. Sonthonax, thanking the electoral assembly, told it: “In France the colonial cabal, which I had dispersed, has been rallying since my absence. Already your former tyrants have won over some influential members of the legislature.” At that time, throughout the North, the colonists were called Négrivores.
