Fort-Dauphin. Laveaux takes possession in the name of the Republic; renamed Fort-Liberté.

At the same time Governor Laveaux went with some troops to Fort-Dauphin, or Bayaha, and took possession of it in the name of the Republic on 14 June (26 Prairial, Year 4). The civil commission decreed that Fort-Dauphin should be called Fort-Liberté. This new name pleased the Black people of the town, who gave magnificent festivities for Governor Laveaux. He at once armed Fort Labouque and the battery of L’Anse. On the day after the republicans’ entry (15 June) the Spanish troops evacuated the place; they embarked for Santo Domingo on four ships of the squadron of the Marquis del Socorro.
