Saint-Marc. Seat of the Sénéchaussée; treaty of union with the freedmen.

Then the Sénéchaussée of Saint-Marc, formed of the parishes of Saint-Marc, the Arcahaie, the Verrettes and the Gonaïves, made with the freedmen a treaty of union whose purpose was to second and support their claims (19 April). A council of peace and union, independent of the Colonial Assembly, was instituted to direct the four parishes. The league was strengthened by the adherence of the Marmelade and several other districts.
