LETTER OF THE MINISTER to the Administrators, for payment, from the Fund for executed nègres, of a nègre killed during a Hunt for marrons, although he was not one
I have received, Gentlemen, your Letter of 17 April last, in which you report to me the death of the person named Achille, nègre belonging to the Butler heirs, killed by the person named Frèse, who had taken him for one of the nègres marrons he was hunting. Frèse, bearer of an order for the hunt of nègres marrons, has only a mistake to reproach himself with, and cannot personally be held responsible for it; it is not just, on the other hand, that the Butler heirs should be victims of this event, and their claim for the value of their nègre is well founded. The King has accordingly ordered that they be reimbursed from the fund for executed nègres, on the footing of 2,700 livres, money of the Colony. I beg you to make known to the Conseil Supérieur du Cap the intention of His Majesty, and to see to its execution.
Registered at the Conseil du Cap, 27 April 1781.
