Leclerc’s squadron arrives before Port-au-Prince
Haitian
On 3 February 1802, the squadron of the Leclerc expedition arrived before the town. Joy was painted on all faces. People were weary of the despotism of Toussaint. A single man, Lamartinière, commander of the 3rd colonial, known for the violence of his character and for his intrepidity, exhorted, but in vain, the citizens to arm themselves for the defense of the town. The French are coming, he said, to re-establish slavery. His voice had no echo: all the inhabitants believed in the magnanimity of France.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-AU PRINCE [le].
